OFFENCES AND PENALTIES

The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (MVA), Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 (CMV), Chandigarh Motor Vehicles Rules and the Rules of Road Regulations, 1989 (RRR) are the legal instruments for the conduct of road traffic in India.

4.Driving without valid permit           Rs. 5000/- (not less than Rs. 2000/-)

OFFENCES RELATED TO DRIVING

1.Over speeding                                    Rs. 400/-

2.Dangerous/reckless driving            Rs.1000/-and /or imprisonment (6months)

3.Driving under the influence             Rs.2000/- and/or imprisonment
   of alcohol/drugs                                                                        (6months)

4.Dangerous lane cutting                     Rs.100/-

5.Overtaking dangerously                   Rs.100/-

6.Jumping signal                                   Rs.100/-

7.Driving on footpath                           Rs.100/-

8.Stopping at pedestrian cross ing     Rs.100/-

9.Crossing stop line                              Rs.100/-

10.Parking violations                           Rs.100/-

  Other Offences

1.      Using private vehicle for commercial purpose Rs. 5000/- (not less than Rs.2000/-)

2.      Overloading a goods vehicle. Rs.2000/- plus Rs.1000/- for every additional ton.

3.      Breach of permit conditions. Imprisonment and/or fine of Rs.5000/- (not less than Rs.2000/-)

4.      Carrying goods in dangerous or hazardous manner. Imprisonment and/or fine of Rs.3000/-
